Council receives last public testimony on urban reserves

On May 20 the Metro Council held its last public hearing on the upcoming designation of urban reserves. Urban reserves will be areas outside of the current urban growth boundary that will be designated as places where future urban development may occur over the next 50 years.

Metro Council approves funding for South Waterfront Transportation Management Association

The Metro Council approved funding Thursday, May 20, for the South Waterfront Transportation Management Association. The nonprofit will begin work on July 1 to increase awareness and promote the use of transportation options, such as cycling, walking, ridesharing and riding transit to reduce congestion and improve air quality.

Metro honored by the Friends of Trees for community leadership

The Friends of Trees is honoring Metro with its 2010 Community Partner Leadership Award. "Metro has been a generous and steadfast partner with Friends of Trees; most notably the Collins Sanctuary restoration and the I-205 multi-use path trees planting to provide shade, noise abatement and restore natural area habitat," said Scott Fogarty, Executive Director of Friends of Trees, in a letter informing Metro of the honor.

Metro approves funding for local projects to improve existing roads

Taking action on a Washington County and Oregon Department of Transportation decision, the Metro Council today approved redirection of money originally destined to fund a large, limited-access 4-lane arterial in Washington and Clackamas counties to four community projects. Public opposition to the arterial effectively removed it from long-term regional plans, freeing up state and federal funding to improve traffic flow on the existing road system.

Metro greens up with special bikes

Metro has expanded its transportation fleet with two new vehicles - but they aren't trucks or autos. They're bicycles, which will no doubt get a lot of use by Metro staff as they head out of the building to do Metro business throughout the week.

A screening committee made up of independent experts has recommended that Metro fully or partially fund 17 projects that will support the development of sustainable, vibrant communities, safe and walkable neighborhoods, and local jobs throughout the region.
