Metro is launching a new program to support community-driven placemaking activities across greater Portland. Now through May 26, interested organizations, governments and agencies can apply for grants ranging from $5,000 to $25,000 to create placemaking projects that promote equity, partnerships and community empowerment.

Through a collaboration that started in spring 2016, volunteers collect the leaves, twigs and vegetation left over from pruning and other grounds maintenance done at Metro parks, natural areas and cemeteries. The debris is delivered to the Oregon Zoo, where animals consume the vegetation, known as browse.
