Town planning expert to speak on centers and corridors at May series

Internationally known town planner Andres Duany, co-founder of the Congress for the New Urbanism, will speak as part of an upcoming discussion series in Portland, "Growing the greatest places: New strategies and tools to regenerate the centers and corridors." Duany will speak May 12 to May 14 at four events, at Metro and other locations around Portland.

Visitors check out Metro's newest Bike There! map. Metro's Bike There! map has a long legacy stretching back, not decades, but more than a century. On Thursday, May 6, Metro Senior Transportation Planner Matthew Hampton took visitors behind the scenes of the Bike There! map which has its roots in the first bicycle map ever produced in the region. The year was in 1896.

Metro partners to improve eastside MAX station areas

Neighbors needed for fundraising committee for memorial park at Lone Fir Cemetery

A group of local experts convened by Metro met for the first time yesterday to discuss fundraising for a memorial at Lone Fir Pioneer Cemetery. The committee will develop a campaign aimed to raise $2 million to build a memorial for the southwest portion of the cemetery. Founded in 1855, Lone Fir is the burial ground of some of Portland's most prominent first residents. Metro has been working with partners and the surrounding community to recognize early Chinese immigrants and patients of Dr. Hawthorne, founder of Portland's first mental health hospital, interred at the southwest corner of the cemetery, referred to as Block 14.

Metro acquires 20 acres of forest to protect water quality, elk habitat in Rock Creek area

Metro acquired a 20-acre natural area this month along Alder Creek, one of the most important headwaters of Rock Creek. Combined with an adjacent 20-acre parcel that Metro purchased last year, this property begins to build a swath of protected land in the Rock Creek area in western Multnomah County. Both properties are situated immediately beyond the region's urban growth boundary. The property, which was acquired for about $245,000, will play a key role in safeguarding water quality. It includes 1,700 feet along Alder Creek, which supports winter steelhead and flows into Rock and Abbey creeks one mile south.
