Innovation at The Knoll in Tigard delivers energy savings through design

The 40-foot high "living column" was created with sheet metal and stainless steel cable to grace the entry courtyard of The Knoll, an affordable housing development for seniors set to open next spring in Tigard.

PCPA throws open the drawers to Northwest artists

The Portland Center for the Performing arts is digging deep into Blue Sky Gallery's voluminous drawers full of stunning photography from Northwest artists for its "Out of the Drawers" show. Starting Oct. 7, guests to PCPA's Art Bar and Bistro can peruse photographs from more than 40 Northwest artists who have participated in Blue Sky Gallery's Juried "viewing drawers."

Metro closes more than half of the Sellwood Gap, allowing the Springwater Corridor to expand in Southeast Portland

Runners, walkers and cyclists needn’t scrutinize trail plans to name the region’s most notorious missing piece: the Sellwood Gap, which forces people off the Springwater Corridor for a mile in its namesake neighborhood in Southeast Portland. That gap will shrink dramatically, thanks to an agreement reached this week by Metro and the Oregon Pacific Railroad Co.

Dozens of people enjoyed a special Bike There! tour through Metro's new Graham Oaks Nature Park on Saturday morning, Sept. 18. The ride stretched along a scenic, six-mile route and preceded the park's official opening ceremony featuring a pancake breakfast, learning stations and music.

Metro seeks applicants for four citizen seats on influential transportation committee

Metro's Transportation Policy Alternatives Committee is seeking citizens interested in transportation issues to serve on the panel starting January 2010. There are four citizen positions up for appointment: three are two-year terms and one is a one-year position intended to fill an upcoming vacancy.

Metro welcomes new director of Parks and Environmental Services

Metro Chief Operating Officer Michael Jordan today announced that Paul Slyman will become the agency's new Director of Parks and Environmental Services. In his new role, Slyman will lead a department of more than 100 employees responsible for the management and operations of the agency's solid waste facilities, regional parks, cemeteries and other properties.

A briefing for the Clackamas County Coordinating Committee about the proposed Community Investment Strategy started with a wheelbarrow full of complaints about urban reserves. It didn’t get much less contentious. A few minutes into the meeting, West Linn City Councilor Teri Cummings rolled a wheelbarrow full of reports into the ballroom at Milwaukie’s Grey Gables Estate.

A change of attitudes made for a positively cordial tone at a joint worksession of the Damascus City Council and the Metro Council Wednesday night in the far-flung hamlet southeast of Portland. It’s a far cry from 2002, when the Metro Council was essentially forced by state law into gobbling the ravines and buttes of northern Clackamas County into the urban growth boundary, a messy land use decision that prompted changes to land use law and the development and urban and rural reserves.
