The 82nd Avenue transit project reached a major milestone on Jan. 16, when the Steering Committee approved a locally preferred alternative (LPA) for the project–identifying the transit mode, route and general station locations. The LPA also sets the direction for the next phase of the project.
The Steering Committee identified TriMet Frequent Express (FX) as the preferred transit mode for the project. FX is an enhanced bus service that improves transit speed and reliability and pedestrian connections to bus stations.TriMet currently has one FX route that serves Division Street between Gresham and Downtown Portland.
The new recommended route will run primarily along 82nd Avenue, between Portland’s Cully neighborhood and the Clackamas Town Center Transit Center. It will include 35 new stations with boarding platforms, shelters and other amenities.
TriMet’s Line 72, which currently serves the route, will continue to operate from Swan Island to a new turnaround point at Parkrose Transit Center.
The 82nd Avenue transit project construction is expected to begin in 2027, with services expected in summer 2029.
The Steering Committee’s LPA recommendation also marks the transition of project leadership from Metro to TriMet, who will lead the project through design and construction as well as oversee a Community Advisory Committee. Concurrently, project staff will work towards finalizing the capital and operating financial plan and completing the required environmental analysis.
Metro will continue to lead the environmental review process and will host technical documents.
