The sun shone brightly on the restored flag pole at Metro’s Glendoveer Golf Course and Fitness Trail during a rededication ceremony Jan. 27. Repaired by American Legion Post No. 1, the restoration work and ceremony was a salute to veterans from every branch of service, their families and the surrounding Southeast Portland community.
A seven-man strong honor guard in dress uniform performed the flag-raising ceremony accompanied by music, using precise protocols established by the United States government.
American Legion Post No. 1 is committed to serving all veterans. Commander Earl Day noted that a significant number of veterans live in the Portland metropolitan area. The volunteer legionnaires also support efforts to improve the lives of children and community members who are less fortunate.
A new flag now waves over Glendoveer’s popular fitness trail, used daily by an estimated 5,000 people. Glendoveer provides amenities for golfers and nature lovers alike with two 18-hole courses, a pro shop, covered tennis courts, a restaurant and two-mile trail, all surrounded by hundreds of majestic fir trees.
