Southwest Corridor Plan staff recommend the steering committee remove from further consideration transit tunnels beneath Marquam Hill and Hillsdale, and delaying a decision on whether to keep studying a tunnel to provide direct light rail service to Portland Community College's Sylvania campus.

$539,000 in new community grant funds expected with the first expansion of the 25-year-old Metro Community Enhancement Grants program

For the first time since its inception the Metro Community Enhancement Grants program is seeing an expansion. Beginning July 1, the program will be rolling out to four additional regional waste facilities, and the fee that funds the program will be doubling in its first ever increase. These changes mean an expected $856,000 will be collected to support the communities that host these facilities in the 2015-2016 program cycle. That’s an additional $539,000 in grant funds form the current 2014-2015 program.

Metro Council to have review board look at remote elephant center feasibility

The Metro Council on Thursday discussed the creation of an independent review board to study the feasibility of creating a remote elephant center outside the zoo. Interim zoo director Teri Dresler said that group’s confirmed membership is to be finalized by the end of the month.

Powell Jacob celebrated his sixth birthday last fall with a volunteer party at Oxbow Regional Park. He invited about 15 friends and classmates to help pick up litter around the park. In lieu of gifts, Powell asked for contributions to the Oregon Food Bank.

Bus rapid transit between Portland and Gresham glided forward Monday as the Powell-Division Transit and Development Project steering committee expressed unanimous support of moving into a more detailed design and engagement project phase. The steering committee had just a few amendments to a Transit Action Plan that includes a range of actions for Metro and other project partners to work on as the project gets closer to reality.

Convention center takes steps to cut waste, improve sustainability

The Oregon Convention Center has a reputation for being one of the most eco-friendly convention centers in the U.S. – and it has the LEED Platinum certification to back that reputation.
