The issue also comes with a free poster about oak trees. The poster supplements the cover story about an innovative project to map endangered white oak trees. Oregon white oak habitat once thrived in abundance, but urbanization, farming and other factors reduced oak habitat to single-digit percentages of their historic range.
The ongoing Regional Oak Mapping Project blends Native American history and culture, global positioning system devices, smartphones and 100 volunteers to create a baseline map of where white oaks remain in the region.
The project is a overseen by a group of partners, including Metro, the Intertwine Alliance and Kingfisher Ecological Services. The volunteers are led by Savahna Jackson, 22, and Sequoia Breck, 19, who work for the Native American Youth and Family Center.
Check out the full issue to find out more about the project, learn where to watch spawning salmon fight their way up the Sandy River and get ideas on ways to save money on school supplies.
