Much of that waste goes to Metro South transfer station, a temporary depot that processes and stores waste before it heads to a landfill or other destinations.
This public facility allows businesses and residents to get rid of their excess junk, bulky items, recyclables and household hazardous wastes – the things that are difficult to dispose of.
Metro South sees over 250,000 customers a year and has outgrown the footprint of its nearly 40-year-old facility. Metro planners have identified a potential site for a new, state-of-the-art transfer facility in Clackamas County, a place that could be both an essential part of the garbage and recycling system and an asset to the community.
