As part of international celebrations of GIS Day, Metro will host a Mapathon from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18 at Metro Regional Center.
The Mapathon will help Missing Maps, a volunteer-powered organization that seeks to help humanitarian organizations respond to crises around the world.
Many places suffering from natural disasters, disease and poverty around the world do not have complete maps of streets, communities or resources, making it difficult for humanitarian relief workers to reach the people who need help most.
Through the Missing Maps project, anyone can help by using satellite imagery to update maps that humanitarian organizations can use to save lives in faraway places.
No prior experience or technical expertise is needed to join the Mapathon. Just a laptop, a mouse and an eagerness to help.
