Residents of Metro Council District 2 can now apply to fill the newly-vacant seat.
The Metro Council has 90 days to select a replacement for Councilor Carlotta Collette, who stepped down from her seat on Jan. 2 because she was moving to Corvallis.
Applications for the seat are due by the close of business on March 1, 2018. A public hearing on the vacancy is scheduled for 6 p.m. March 8, at the Willamette View Terrace Auditorium, 12705 SE River Road in Milwaukie.
Applications are available at the Metro Regional Center, 600 NE Grand Avenue in Portland.
The council formally declared a vacancy in the District 2 seat on Jan. 4, and will place announcements in publications and notify cities, neighborhood associations and other groups in her district, which includes much of urban Clackamas County as well as areas of Southwest Portland between Interstate 5 and the Willamette River.
The council must appoint a replacement no later than April 2.
Separately, the regularly-scheduled election for District 2 will continue in 2018. Candidates for District 2 must file by March 6, 2018, for the May 15 primary. If no candidate receives more than 50 percent of the vote, the top two candidates will face off in the Nov. 6 general election, with the winner taking office in January 2019. The council appointment will take place after the filing deadline for the seat, and the appointee would be eligible to run to retain the seat if they filed to run before the March 6 elections office deadline.
Collette served 10 years on the council, after being appointed in 2008. Her decade on the council included a three-month stint as Acting Council President, filling the vacancy created when David Bragdon stepped down three months before his term was scheduled to end in 2010.
