As our nation turns 243 this week, I want to reflect on the values and principles that guided our nation’s founders. Our independence was established during a time when Americans were discovering what it meant to be American, in a way we’re still trying to figure that out.
But, we are guided by the words of our founders that all are created equal and endowed with certain unalienable rights among these life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Our nation’s values remain a beacon for the world.
As a first generation Oregonian, my family’s story reflects the pursuit of everything this country has to offer. Little by little progress is being made locally, statewide and nationally through grassroots efforts that shine a light on our evolving understanding of justice.
I’m proud to be a steward of Metro’s vision of ensuring everyone in our region has the opportunity to thrive. As we celebrate this Fourth of July, I hope you will reflect on the many sacrifices made by individuals and communities throughout our history that affords us the rights we have today.
Most importantly, we must reflect on the work we do today, as Americans, as we strive to build a more perfect union for all. Thank you.
