Metro will honor veterans over Memorial Day weekend at some of its historic cemeteries. Staff and volunteers will be on hand at Lone Fir Cemetery at SE 26th Avenue and SE Stark Street and at Multnomah Park Cemetery at SE 82nd Avenue and SE Holgate Blvd., both in Portland.
Metro staff and volunteers will be available to help locate grave sites, provide vases for flowers and share information about the cemeteries. Visitors are encouraged to stop by the tables to add contact information to their family burial records. Staff and volunteers will be on hand from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 25-27.
Metro places a unique emphasis on sustainability and biodiversity in each of its cemeteries – providing access to nature and using practices that protect the environment and the plants, insects and animals that call each cemetery home.
A new memorial garden is currently under construction at Lone Fir Cemetery. The Chestnut Grove Memorial Garden will offer families an opportunity to leave their legacy in a unique way at one of the region's most scenic cemeteries. Metro, the Friends of Lone Fir Cemetery and Lone Fir Cemetery Foundation invite you to celebrate the opening of the garden and offering the community a chance to "picnic with the departed." The picnic is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. on June 27th.
Metro’s cemeteries are valued as sacred places. We recognize our cemeteries serve as not only places for remembrance, but also places for quiet reflection and respite for the community. They are available to the public for interment and inurnment, grave visitation, reflection and historical research. Metro strives to protect the integrity of our cemeteries while ensuring that adornments and remembrances respect the dignity of each property. These rules, which have been in effect for nearly 20 years, help keep the cemeteries safe, clean and attractive for our many visitors.
