Metro partners to improve eastside MAX station areas

East County residents will begin to see upgrades that enhance existing light rail stations and improve neighborhood connections. In addition to a new station at Civic Drive in Gresham, work is under way from Northeast 82nd Avenue all the way to the end of the Blue Line at Cleveland Avenue.

Neighbors needed for fundraising committee for memorial park at Lone Fir Cemetery

A group of local experts convened by Metro met for the first time yesterday to discuss fundraising for a memorial at Lone Fir Pioneer Cemetery. The committee will develop a campaign aimed to raise $2 million to build a memorial for the southwest portion of the cemetery. Founded in 1855, Lone Fir is the burial ground of some of Portland's most prominent first residents. Metro has been working with partners and the surrounding community to recognize early Chinese immigrants and patients of Dr. Hawthorne, founder of Portland's first mental health hospital, interred at the southwest corner of the cemetery, referred to as Block 14.

Metro acquires 20 acres of forest to protect water quality, elk habitat in Rock Creek area

Metro acquired a 20-acre natural area this month along Alder Creek, one of the most important headwaters of Rock Creek. Combined with an adjacent 20-acre parcel that Metro purchased last year, this property begins to build a swath of protected land in the Rock Creek area in western Multnomah County. Both properties are situated immediately beyond the region's urban growth boundary. The property, which was acquired for about $245,000, will play a key role in safeguarding water quality. It includes 1,700 feet along Alder Creek, which supports winter steelhead and flows into Rock and Abbey creeks one mile south.

Metro helps close gap in Fanno Creek Greenway Trail for walkers, runners, cyclists

Metro has secured rights to extend the Fanno Creek Greenway Trail on two properties in central Tigard, helping close a gap in the popular walking, jogging and bicycling path. When the greenway is complete, it will traverse 15 miles and five cities, beginning at the shores of the Willamette River in Southwest Portland and weaving through Beaverton, Tigard and Durham to Tualatin, where Fanno Creek meets the Tualatin River. This commuting and recreational trail connects dozens of neighborhoods, parks, schools and businesses. On a typical summer day, 300 people pass through Tigard's portion of the trail.

Metro Council President takes part in White House conference

Bragdon received an invitation to take part in the Friday, April 16 conference, which will address challenges, opportunities and innovations surrounding the conservation of lands throughout the nation and here in the Pacific Northwest.
