Town Center Station inspires sustainable living close to jobs, shopping and transit
Town Center Station, a newly completed transit-oriented development project supported by Metro's TOD Program, was the site of a grand opening celebration on Tuesday, May 4, with a crowd of approximately 50 county officials, project developers, lenders and planning staff in attendance.
Designed to provide affordable, high quality housing located within walking or transit distance to work, amenities and other regional destinations, Town Center Station officially opened with 46 of the 52 units already leased; a testimony to the growing appeal of compact, transit-oriented living.
Designated as an Earth Advantage project for achieving a recognized standard of energy efficiency, indoor air quality, environmental responsibility and resource efficiency, the project also features a photovoltaic array on the roof, high efficiency energy smart appliances in the units, and a site design incorporating low impact development practices.
The development is conveniently located across from the north side of the Clackamas Town Center shopping complex and within 1/2 mile of both a frequent service bus line and a MAX light rail station to reduce resident dependency on the private automobile for errands, recreation and commuting.
"Town Center Station provides a glimpse of affordable, 21st century urban living," said Metro Councilor Carlotta Collette, within whose district the development is located. "It captures the sense of community and personal connections that single-family neighborhoods provide, but within a compact, transit-oriented development that supports sustainable living."
Residents are offered classes at the on-site community center on the financial benefits of replacing driving with walking, bicycling and using public transit. In addition, the project includes secure bike storage on the ground floor to support the alternative transportation options promoted to residents.
Reflecting the developer's, Geller Silvis & Associates, Inc., commitment to eliminating hunger, residents have access to 3,800 square feet of onsite green space for growing food and receive assistance in organic gardening practices.
Town Center Station redefines affordable, urban living and demonstrates that auto-oriented environments can be transformed into livable, vibrant communities through high quality urban design, low impact development practices, and on-site opportunities to connect with neighbors.
