A new memorial garden at Lone Fir Historic Cemetery will provide more options to people who choose to be cremated. The Chestnut Grove Memorial Garden will offer families an opportunity to leave their legacy in a unique way at one of the region's most scenic cemeteries.
Metro is joining with the Lone Fir Cemetery Foundation and the Friends of Lone Fir Cemetery in celebrating the opening of the garden and offering the community a chance to "picnic with the departed." The picnic is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. on June 27th.
"The garden first and foremost serves the regional community by giving more of us a choice to be a part of Lone Fir and its history," said Metro Councilor Bob Stacey, whose district includes Lone Fir. "The garden not only helps meet the growing demand for cremation and other remembrances, it’s also a good fit for Metro, which places a unique emphasis on nature and sustainability at its 14 historic cemeteries."
Nestled in Southeast Portland, Lone Fir Historic Cemetery is the resting place of more than 25,000 people. Chestnut Grove, scheduled to open this summer, will provide an option for the increasing number of people who choose to be cremated.
