The Metro Council is poised to fill its presidency vacancy on Thursday, but it's unclear who will take the gavel for the rest of 2010.
A late change to the Oct. 28 council agenda shows Councilor Rod Park bringing forward a resolution "for the purpose of appointing a replacement to fill the office of the Metro Council President." But Park wouldn't say what the resolution would specifically do, or who it would appoint.
Another councilor, Rex Burkholder, would only say that negotiations were ongoing.
The timing of the resolution is intriguing – Burkholder is slated to leave Oct. 29 for a month-long trip, and the council had until Dec. 9 to appoint a permanent replacement for David Bragdon, who resigned in September to become New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg's sustainability adviser.
Under one scenario reported earlier this year, Acting Council President Carlotta Collette could be appointed to the fill out vacancy, and resign her district seat in Clackamas County. Collette was re-elected in the May primary, and would be sworn back in to that seat in 2011.
Former Hillsboro Mayor Tom Hughes and former 1000 Friends of Oregon Director Bob Stacey are facing off in the Nov. 2 general election for the four-year council president term that starts in January.
