Metro Central enhancement grants help improve Northwest Portland and mitigate the impact of the Metro Central transfer station.
Metro has $245,000 available for community enhancement grants to fix, restore and make improvements to Northwest Portland neighborhoods. Applications are due to Metro at 5 p.m. Sept. 16, 2016.
Metro Central enhancement grants support residents within a target area that stretches along the west side of the Willamette River from the Northwest Neighborhood Association to Linnton, along with an area around the St. Johns Bridge within North Portland’s Cathedral Park neighborhood. Grants are awarded on an annual basis by the Metro Central Enhancement Committee, made up of representatives from the surrounding neighborhoods, businesses and environmental community. In 2016, the Metro Central Enhancement Committee funded 11 local improvement projects totaling $377,406.
Awards typically range from $10,000 to $50,000. Funds come from a $1 fee collected on every ton of garbage disposed of at the Metro Central transfer station in Northwest Portland.
A free grant-writing workshop with childcare and refreshments is offered at 6 p.m. on July 26 at the Friendly House, 1737 NW 26th Ave., Portland.
