Metro restores thousands of acres of natural areas in the Portland metropolitan area, and tracks the success of its long-term efforts with dedicated volunteers.
On Thursday, go behind the scenes with one of these volunteers when "Oregon Field Guide" follows Akiko Onuma from Metro's wildlife monitoring program as she wades through waterways searching for amphibian egg masses – telltale signs that restoration efforts are working. Akiko, from Hawaii, marvels at the jelly-like egg masses as she gets a feel for Oregon’s chilly wetlands in February.
Volunteers watch over the sensitive amphibians that breed in Metro's natural areas during winter. Some 60 volunteers tracked frogs and salamanders at 10 sites this year.
The show will run on KOPB channel 10, Thursday, March 31 from 8:30 to 9 p.m. and repeat Sunday from 6:30 to 7 p.m.
