Students from Oregon City High School's construction class visited Metro last night to make a presentation to Council on the students' work at Wesley Lynn Park.
Since 2008, students in the class have used grants from the Oregon City Community Enhancement Fund to build a pathway, pergola and other covered structures at the park. With this year's grant of $24,770, the students will build restroom, storage and concession areas to match other buildings. The class is called Oregon City Construction, and is lead by teacher Britt Tucker.
Student Miguel Curiel told councilors that he and his classmates literally started working on the projects from scratch, going "out on the field with spray paint to outline the buildings," then began meeting with architects and engineers to finalize plans.
"We get involved in all the work," Curiel said, "and Britt [Tucker] is there to supervise."
While Tucker said the kids' work is excellent, their mission statement and their ability to develop relationships in the community make him proud.
"It's not just about building, it's about community relationships and the core of what they really wanted to do," Tucker said. "From the beginning, without a doubt, they agreed that they wanted to change the image of teenagers in the community."
"I cannot tell you how proud I am of these kids," Tucker added. "For all these years, without fail, they have lived by their code and enhanced the environment of Oregon City, making it a healthier community."
Student Reese Eells, who began the presentation, said plans are being review by engineer Dwight Mason of Oregon City. Construction permits are expected in January.
Funds for the Oregon City enhancement grants come from a 50 cent per ton surcharge on garbage disposed of at the Metro South transfer station, and must directly benefit the area or residents living within the city limits.
