Metro seeks applicants for four citizen seats on influential transportation committee

Metro's Transportation Policy Alternatives Committee is seeking citizens interested in transportation issues to serve on the panel starting January 2010. There are four citizen positions up for appointment: three are two-year terms and one is a one-year position intended to fill an upcoming vacancy.

A briefing for the Clackamas County Coordinating Committee about the proposed Community Investment Strategy started with a wheelbarrow full of complaints about urban reserves. It didn’t get much less contentious. A few minutes into the meeting, West Linn City Councilor Teri Cummings rolled a wheelbarrow full of reports into the ballroom at Milwaukie’s Grey Gables Estate.

A change of attitudes made for a positively cordial tone at a joint worksession of the Damascus City Council and the Metro Council Wednesday night in the far-flung hamlet southeast of Portland. It’s a far cry from 2002, when the Metro Council was essentially forced by state law into gobbling the ravines and buttes of northern Clackamas County into the urban growth boundary, a messy land use decision that prompted changes to land use law and the development and urban and rural reserves.

U.S. Reps. DeFazio and Oberstar propose change in transportation priorities

Metro Councilors Carlotta Collette, Robert Liberty, Carl Hosticka and Kathryn Harrington joined U.S. Reps. Peter DeFazio and James Oberstar at the Oregon Transportation Research and Education Consortium’s regional transportation and land use decision-making forum on Wednesday. At the forum, DeFazio and Oberstar discussed ways to change the national transportation system’s priorities to advance bicycle commuting and public transit use.

Sherwood next stop for Community Investment Strategy town hall

Metro will be visiting Sherwood this week to talk with residents about how they'd like the region and their community to look in the future. Participants will be encouraged to discuss recommendations calling for a regional Community Investment Strategy for public structures that make our neighborhoods livable – from streets to parks to jobs. The event takes place at the Sherwood Library/City Hall - 22560 SW Pine St. , Sherwood, OR , from 5 to 7 p.m.

East Multnomah leaders hear more about task force

More details emerged Thursday about a proposed regional development task force, as east Multnomah County business and government officials quizzed Metro’s staff chief about the group. Jordan has been outlining the regional task force proposal with various stakeholders groups around the region.

Metro asks residents to take part in forming Community Investment Strategy

Metro is holding its first open house to talk with residents about how they’d like the region and their communities to look in the future. Participants will discuss recommendations calling for a regional Community Investment Strategy for public structures that make our neighborhoods livable – from streets to parks to jobs. One of six events, the first takes place in Southeast Portland at the Lents Boys and Girls Club, 9330 Southeast Harold St., from 5 to 7 p.m.

Homebuilders question denser development

Portland’s home builders, continuing to struggle with government aspirations for denser communities, vented frustrations at a Thursday morning meeting with Metro officials. Key among the frustrations expressed by the homebuilders was an emphasis on higher density development, particularly in newer areas brought into the urban growth boundary.

A regional committee that controls transportation spending in the Portland area today approved spending additional money to fill a budget hole for the Milwaukie light rail project.

Washington County officials question Jordan on Community Investment Strategy

Members of the Coordinating Committee raised concerns about the report’s recommendation that future residential development in areas added to the urban growth boundary achieve a density of 15 units per net developable acre, a density greater than what is achieved in many areas of the region today.
