The 14 historic cemeteries Metro manages stand as the most visible landmarks of the beginning of the colonization of greater Portland by white pioneers, and the stories we have of the people buried at them are mostly of men. There are scant records of many of the women buried at them, especially those buried in the 19th century. Through a grant to help celebrate the centennial of the ratification of the 19 Ammendment, which established the right for women to vote though it did not ensure it for non-white women, Metro was able to learn more about some of the remarkable women buried at these cemeteries.
Three of their stories are featured in the Spring 2021 edition of Our Big Backyard.
