Community celebration kicks off new era at Orenco Woods natural area in Hillsboro

The sun came out Thursday – and so did a bald eagle – for a celebration of Hillsboro’s newest natural area: Orenco Woods. Metro teamed up with the City of Hillsboro to protect the 42-acre site, which will be transformed into a nature park.

Heavy rains close Oxbow Regional Park

Heavy rains have temporarily closed Oxbow Regional Park. The park, east of Gresham, hugs the Sandy River, which is quickly approaching road level in the area. The closure is expected to last until Saturday, when colder weather is forecast to turn the rain that's flooding the Sandy into snow that gradually melts.

A world away from war, transit helps her get her life back

Diana came to the Portland area in February 1996 with only her daughter, a few belongings and the desperation to put years of horror behind them.

Metro grant helps Cycling Center leverage funding to help families bike

With a grant from Metro, the Community Cycling Center studied the cultural and socioeconomic barriers to bicycling in some of Portland’s poorer neighborhoods. Now, the center is using the study’s findings to leverage additional funding and roll through barriers to riding a bike.

DA won't file charges in Blue Lake bones case

Grant connects neighbors to nature in St. Johns

Baltimore Woods was in limbo. While the recession kept developers at bay, the area gave rise to weeds, litter and neglect. But neighbors around the 30-acre corridor in North Portland’s St. Johns neighborhood saw the land as a community asset. And with the support of a Metro Nature in Neighborhoods capital grant, the woods were given a new lease on life.

Metro wins two-year extension to recycle Oregon’s latex paint

Metro has scored a two-year extension to recycle latex paint received from collection points across Oregon. The contract, which began in 2010, has helped the agency recoup the cost of its paint recycling program, maximize the region’s paint recycling rate and show its commitment as a partner in the statewide effort to reduce waste.

Opt In celebrates reaching 8,000 participants
