Metro is conducting an exploratory survey of businesses and nonprofit organizations working in reuse and repair in greater Portland.
Reuse and repair organizations and businesses play a crucial role in reducing our region’s environmental impact. The services reuse and repair groups provide have positive impacts on the environment by saving materials and energy.
Metro has partnered with Start Consulting Group for this survey to better understand how much is being reused or repaired in the region.
Information provided in the survey will help Metro:
- Track the growth of reuse and repair in the region
- Represent its positive impact
- Connect the community with reuse and repair services
- Invest in the reuse and repair community
For this survey, reuse and repair are defined as activities that involve collecting, selling, distributing and repairing used items. This survey is also intended to capture data from sharing systems like tool libraries and reusable serviceware programs, and organizations focused on food rescue and recovery.
The survey is part of ongoing work by Metro to measure the size of the reuse sector and track progress on the 2030 Regional Waste Plan. The plan is both a vision for greater Portland’s garbage, recycling and reuse system and a blueprint for achieving that vision. It was created in partnership with cities, counties, local businesses and community leaders to set direction for how we manage and improve the system between 2019 and 2030.
