This week the Metro Council joined others across Oregon to send a letter opposing a rule change proposed by Secretary Carson at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The rule would determine “mixed-status" immigrant families no longer eligible for federal housing programs. This means that more than 55,000 American children would be evicted from their homes, no longer eligible to receive housing assistance because of the immigration status of other family members.
While partners across Oregon are working hard to keep families in their homes and help families out of homelessness as quickly as possible, this rule would result in families facing certain housing instability, eviction, and homelessness.
In greater Portland we welcome all of our neighbors and we believe everyone needs a safe and affordable place to call home. When these values come under attack, we stand up and speak out. Metro joined partners across Oregon in a shared promise to protect these families and all who struggle to find a safe, stable and affordable home.
