Visitors to Oxbow Regional Park will find new traffic pattern at the campground. Metro reconfigured the roadways at Oxbow after flooding in early 2012.
Metro has used the best possible science and planning to manage Oxbow Regional Park. But at the end of the day, nature is powerful – and, sometimes unpredictable. We’re seeing that play out very dramatically with the flooding and erosion that affected the park during this winter season.
Safety is Metro’s top priority. But we’re also committed to letting people enjoy Oxbow, which is a spectacular place to connect with nature. Some of the key emergency actions we’ve taken in the interim are removing structures near the river bank, reinforcing the road into the campground and relocating the campground’s amphitheater in time for summer activities. Camping at Oxbow is on a first-come, first-served basis.
Meanwhile, we’ll be engaging our team of scientists, land managers, park planners and environmental educators to consider how we can best protect Oxbow, while maintaining a terrific park experience for visitors. Once we’ve received the geotechnical study recommendations, staff will focus on identifying suitable locations for public use and future structures.
