In January, Metro's Powell-Division Transit and Development Project begins a series of conversations exploring safety and security along the region's first bus rapid transit line.
When project planners ask residents about their concerns and hopes for the new transit line between Portland and Gresham, they hear a lot about reliability, comfort and speed.
But they also hear concerns about safety and security repeated by many.
Among the questions people ask: What will new transit mean for safety in my neighborhood? How can I feel safer taking transit? Even if I don't use the new transit line, will it mean I can walk or bicycle more safely in my neighborhood or to the places I need to go?
Metro and its partners are taking these concerns seriously in planning the Powell-Division project, which will bring faster transit service to a significant commuting, commercial and educational corridor.
In January, the project team invites the public to dig in at the first of a series of safety and security "work group" meetings. Anyone can participate.
