What's the fuss about this bus? Last month, Metro News took a ride around on one of the country's most extensive BRT systems, operated by RTC Transit in Las Vegas. Its eight BRT lines, all launched in the last decade, run the gamut of what planners describe when they talk about bus rapid transit.

Metro Council zeroes in on tax rate for potential natural areas levy

Metro Councilors on Tuesday put a dollar figure on a potential levy to fund maintenance at the Portland region's parks and natural areas. The councilors gave a unanimous thumbs-up to a tax rate of 9.6 cents per $1,000 of assessed valuation for the potential levy. They're scheduled to decide later this month whether to put the levy on the May 2013 ballot.

Negotiations over hotel subsidy continue as consultant report touts benefits to region

The so-called headquarters hotel is a proposed 600 room Hyatt hotel to be built just north of the center. Metro is leading negotiations with the project's developers about how much of the project's anticipated $157 million to $200 million cost would be picked up by the public sector.

Metro Council President Tom Hughes said Tuesday the ownership arrangement for the Oregon Zoo's elephant calf seems routine, and expressed support for zoo officials in the wake of questions about the new addition's future.

Blue Heron discussions will move into 2013 after environmental investigation shows no deal killers

An environmental study of an abandoned industrial site near Willamette Falls didn't turn up anything to deter Metro officials studying whether to try to buy the former Blue Heron Paper Mill. Metro has been looking at the Blue Heron site for more than a year, since the paper company declared bankruptcy, freeing up the area for possible redevelopment and public access. The property is currently held by a bankruptcy court trustee.

Metro Council confirms appointments to Public Engagement Review Committee

The Metro Council confirmed today the appointment of 15 representatives to serve on Metro's new Public Engagement Review Committee. The committee will meet twice a year to help guide Metro's public engagement efforts.

Oregon Convention Center hotel votes pushed back to 2013

The Metro Council is unlikely to vote this year on a proposed finance package for construction of a hotel near the Oregon Convention Center, after the regional government's staff asked for more time to negotiate with the project's developers.

The Office of the Metro Auditor released an audit today that reviewed Metro’s organizational structure. The purpose of this audit was to determine the effect of a reorganization on the structure and to gain an understanding of personnel expenditures.

Metro saves more resources as it progresses on sustainability goals

Today Metro announced its progress toward sustainability goals in internal operations. Metro’s second report shows a year of results reaching key objectives in its Sustainability Plan, highlighted with success stories and strategies for further improvement.

Council could vote Dec. 18 whether to send natural areas levy to voters

Earlier this month, Metro sponsored a telephone poll of voters in the region to gauge their opinions on a possible levy. In the survey's initial question, 48 percent of respondents said they'd vote yes for a local option levy to maintain natural areas and improve water quality with annual audits. Twelve percent said they'd vote against it, and 41 percent were undecided.
